Abstract

This is an experience report of a Work Group (GT) of the Education through Work in Health Program (PET-Saúde GraduaSUS) at the Federal University of Vale do São Francisco with the objective of explaining the mental health conditions of a rural community of the Pernambuco backlands, through the development of extensive actions in Basic Units of (UBS). Mental health is considered poor by most participants in extensive activities, with a high rate of common mental disorders. Illness conditions tend to worsen due to unsatisfactory work, education, housing and leisure conditions, in addition to restricted access to community living spaces, goods and services. Exposure to pesticides and the absence of leisure was seen as one of the main risk factors for mental illness in the territory.
