Abstract

University extension project that aims to strengthen the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI), as a strategy to promote, protect and support breastfeeding in a University Hospital. Breastfeeding is essential to achieve the global goals of nutrition, health, survival, economic growth and sustainability. In this sense, the project corroborates the objectives of sustainable development proposed by the United Nations, especially objective 3. Educational activities guided by the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding are carried out as well as other IHAC guidelines including woman-friendly care and with serious newborns. The public reached by the actions were 762 women, who had access to assertive information favoring the knowledge and safety of mothers in the breastfeeding process. In addition to this direct benefit, there was a narrowing between the university and health services, being an important field for research in the area.
