In Brazilian society, the existence of multiple social ills is recurrent, which are confused with the process of formation of our social reality: social inequality, different types of prejudice, etc. With the Covid-19 pandemic and political polarization, the aforementioned socioeconomic problems became more acute and emerged, whether due to the precarious socioeconomic conditions of the majority of the population, or due to the anti-democratic culture expressed by social groups with an authoritarian profile. Furthermore, with the contribution of social networks, which create bubbles between various social segments, there is the construction of a public space permeated with prejudice, misinformation and total alienation, hindering the construction of conscientious, reflective and critical postures, which are healthy for citizenship and for democracy. The Films, Debates and Citizenship project aimed to contribute to changing this design of public space at a regional level, as it enabled the construction of activities in which discussion, reflection and dialogic practice could be valued. Along these lines, a fruitful discussion of 8 films on various themes took place over the course of 2023, with Law and Psychology students, as well as with the entire local community in the Nova Alta Paulista – S.P. region.
