Extension projects are important to bring the community closer to the university, as well as to generate a practical environment for academics. However, many challenges arise in the day-to-day running of an extension project. The objective of this study was to analyze the factors that influenced schoolchildren participating in an extension project to give up attending the project. A questionnaire was administered with twelve multiple-choice questions and four answer options (did not contribute at all, contributed a little, contributed a lot and was a decisive factor). 20 students who attended the basketball project at least once answered the 12 questions in the questionnaire printed on A4 paper in a school classroom. Collections were carried out over three weeks. The results suggest that the lack of tennis shoes, repetitive failures (error in shooting), physical tiredness, class schedule and difficulties in improving results were the reasons that most influenced people's withdrawal from attending the extension project. Despite being a sport that is not very widespread in our municipality, the research can contribute to ensuring that future extension projects do not cease and seek to mitigate some of the challenges that demotivate and contribute to the abandonment of proposed extension projects.
