Knowledge olimpiad: the tool for mathematics education in Petrolina, PE

The Mathematics is commonly seen as a complicated and tedious subject, which concerns educators, once it provides basis for assessing the education in the country. However, such reality has changed particularly among participants of the national competitions regarding the exact science. Mathematic Olympiad, for instance, has been taken as stimulus tool in teaching, awarding students who achieve good performance. In this perspective, the growth and acceptance of OBMEP among teachers and students in the Regional PE02 was analyzed in order to verify the influence of those Olympiads on the educational achievement of the students of the public education in the state of Pernambuco. This bibliographic study presents the results of the competitions, with special focus on the years between 2012 and 2015, which show the students’ superior performance after carrying out an university extension project for participants of that competition.
