Abstract

The extension project “Dental Care to Patients Transplanted with Hematopoietic Stem-Cell at the University Hospital of UFMG” cares for patients undergoing and those who have done the hematopoietic stem-cells transplant, and it works in the Faculty of Dentistry (FO) of Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) since March 2001. Transplantation of hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (HSCT) is increasingly used with effectiveness in treating various hematologic malignancies or other tissues. However, the lack of care for the oral cavity or inappropriate dental treatment can lead to serious systemic problems during myelosuppression. Patients receive qualified dental care during the pre-and post-transplant, which hosts educational procedures, restorative, surgical, periodontal, endodontic, and prosthetic devices, among others. By aggregating voluntarily teachers, professionals, graduate and postgraduate, this extension project encourages and enables the development of interdisciplinary activities, generating knowledge and research, in order to understand and improve HSCT. The objective of this work is to present the various activities of the extension project, which is already a reference in teaching, research and extension of FO-UFMG related to HSCT.
