Project Alimentos & Saúde – vegetable garden and food education in Public School Dr. Napoleão Sales – Alfenas/MG

Abstract

This paper summarizes the activities developed in the Extension Project “Alimentos & Saúde” of the Universidade Federal de Alfenas (Unifal-MG). Students of pharmacy and nutrition and students of an elementary school located in Alfenas - MG set up a vegetable garden in the school’s vacant land. The cultivated products were used to prepare the food the elementary students would eventually consume, improving the healthiness of school meals. Simultaneously, university students ministered lectures to parents, school staff and the students covering environmental and dietary aspects. The 2-year-project had the support of Alfenas’s City Hall and Emater.
