Introduction: Circulatory system diseases are the leading cause of death in Brazilians over fifty years of age, and are a public health problem. This incidence is correlated with age, sedentary lifestyle and poor adherence to treatment, and self-care is an important strategy for improving prognosis, autonomy, and independence of the individual. Objective: To report the experience of nursing students during extension activities of educational actions to strengthen self-care for people with peripheral vascular diseases treated at the polyclinic of a university hospital. Method: Qualitative and descriptive study, of the experience report type. The educational activities were developed by four nursing students and one nurse professor. Patients with vascular problems treated at the polyclinic participated in the actions. The workshops took place in the service auditorium through thematic discussion circles based on Orem's Self-Care Theory. Results: Seventeen workshops were held with the participation of one hundred and twenty users. The students needed to put into practice their knowledge about anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and semiotics in an accessible and playful way. Conclusion: the extension experience allowed the students to consolidate the knowledge acquired during their training, encouraging them to improve their creativity and communication, bringing them closer to the target population.
