Abstract

At present, university extension is understood as a constituent component of higher education and an inseparable element of teaching and research. The present work had as objective to address historical, conceptual, principles and guidelines that theoretically and methodologically base the extensionist action in Higher Education Institutions in Brazil. Through bibliographic research, discussions were reviewed in some of the main references on the subject. It was observed that university extension cannot be understood as a one-way and unidirectional action of institutions towards society, it must be understood as a process involving educational, cultural and technical-scientific dimensions in citizen interventions in which the subjects of the university/federal institutes and society establish horizontal relations of participation in actions and decision-making, with a view to social transformations.
